SEND Fundamentals

The learning on this page is intended for professionals who want to further develop their fundamental SEND knowledge and experience, after completing the four expected courses that can be found on the SEND homepage.

The learning and development sessions below do not need to be completed in any particular order, although we do recommend ‘Neurodiversity: an introduction’ as a starting point.

Towards the bottom of the page you will find a range of useful resources and links to websites. We will aim to update and add to these sections regularly, so please do keep checking back.

Neurodiversity: An Introduction	This training will give a better understanding of the meaning of the term ‘neurodiversity’, the various ways that it can impact on people, and an overview of the main associated conditions or differences; whether neurodivergence is a disability and the role that external factors play; the importance of creating reasonable adjustment plans and management performance strategies for neurodivergent thinkers; the need to support carers of neurodivergent thinkers in the workplace. Level 2: SEND Basic Awareness	This course covers: Key principles for working with children and young people with SEND, with a focus on inclusion; co-production/ personalisation; advocacy; key processes which support children and young people with SEND, with a focus on EHCP. Roles and responsibilities in a multidisciplinary team, and the local offer and how children, young people and their families can access it.	Click here to enrol
Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Working with Individuals with Learning Disabilities	On completion of this course, you will gain an accredited Level 2 qualification. The course takes on average 4-12 weeks to complete and covers the following: Unit 1: Understand the context of supporting individuals with learning disabilities Unit 2: Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care Unit 3: Introduction to personalisation in social care Unit 4: Principles of positive risk-taking for individuals with disabilities Unit 5: Introductory awareness of autistic spectrum conditions Unit 6: Principles of supporting individuals with a learning disability to access healthcare	Click here to enrol
Video resources to empower young people with SEND and their families	As part of the #AutismADHDAllies and #LetsConnect campaign; the West Yorkshire Neurodiversity Programme and All Sar have co-produced resources for young people and families. Their aim is to empower children and young people to feel independent and supported as they navigate life’s challenges. They have episodes on school transitions, sleep, and eating, and they’ve included a variety of top tips and suggestions to help children and young people find what works best for them. With an emphasis on reducing pressure and encouraging children and young people to take their own path.	Click here to watch
Holistic Outcomes in EHCPs	This training is aimed at adults with a role to play in the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) system. The course will help you understand the system as a whole and how all adults have a part to play in supporting good outcomes.	Click here to enrol
